Just Living: Immigration

The issue of immigration, specifically illegal immigration, was brought to the forefront once again in 2010 when Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed the nation’s toughest bill on illegal immigration into law. The purpose of this legislation was to identify, prosecute, and deport illegal immigrants. There were widespread protests leading up to and following the signing of this bill and it once again brought national attention to this debate.

Sex Trafficking

Sex trafficking is the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person forced to perform such an act is under the age of 18 years. An estimated 2 million children, the majority of them girls, are sexually exploited in the multibillion dollar commercial sex industry (UNICEF). Around the world between 50-60% of the children who are trafficked into sexual slavery are under the age of 16.

Just Living: Haiti

Prior to the earthquake that rocked the nation on January 12th, 2010, Haiti was already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with 80% of the population living under the poverty line and 54% in abject poverty (CIA World Factbook). The earthquake earlier this year simply added to the suffering as it killed 220,000 people, damaged or destroyed 180,000 homes, and left 1.5 million individuals homeless (Disasters Emergency Committee).

Pakistan Flood Relief

Thus, this month for our Just Living segment, which desires to help us see those in our world who are normally invisible to us, our aim is to focus our attention on the flood relief efforts in Pakistan.

Just Living: Fair Trade Coffee

Coffee is big business. It's the second most traded commodity in the
world behind oil and the U.S. imports in excess of $4 billion worth of
coffee every single year. The U.S. also consumes 1/5 or 20% of the
world's coffee, making it the largest consumer of coffee in the world.
However, what many Americans do not understand is that coffee farmers
often toil in what can be called "sweatshops in the field." In that
they're often paid less for their product than what it costs them to
produce it, plunging them into a cycle of poverty and debt. Thus,
