Just a few months ago federal authorities arrested 17 people from Minnesota in connection with human trafficking. Women and children were forced into sex for money and drugs by a network of gangs and traffickers. When this story broke, the Minneapolis community was shocked that this sort of thing was going on. Surprise and skepticism were the responses. But Minnesota has been a source of human trafficking long before this sex trafficking ring. Pimps in Las Vegas refer to Minnesota as "the factory" because 10% of prostitutes there are from Minnesota.
Our community feels compelled to respond. Over the next couple of months we will be learning more about the human trafficking and prostitution that's happening right in our own backyard. Here are the upcoming events you should be aware of:
Not For Sale Documentary: Tonight at the Powell's we will watch a documentary on human trafficking called Not For Sale. Afterward we will have discussion about this issue. Everyone is welcome to join us even if you've never been to the documentary club before. We meet at the Powell's at 7pm (5410 Grove St, Edina).
Just Living: This Sunday our Just Living piece will focus on human trafficking. We will learn a little more about this terrible crime, particularly how it's taking root in our city.
Breaking Free: Breaking Free is one of the few organizations in the country that helps women transition out of a life of prostitution after they have escaped or been rescued. Heather Callier, a staff worker at Breaking Free, will be sharing on February 13 during service about the organization and ways our community can become more involved.
I believe this is a tangible way God is calling our community to get involved in justice issues to proclaim the coming Kingdom of Christ. Each of these events will be helpful in moving us towards action, and I encourage you to attend. I also encourage you to invite any of your friends who might be interested in learning more.
Blessings,
John
