Have you ever felt like being a Christian is harder than it's supposed to be? Have you ever felt like the change and healing that was promised to you is slow in coming? The New Testament is replete with stories of healing and deliverances, as well as bold promises to Christians about freedom from sin and a new radically transformed life. But the reality is most of us feel caught somewhere in between. We become Christians and experience some change for the better, but also struggle with old habits and recurring sins. It's as if we've sort of been saved, changed and transformed, and sort of not.
Over the years this tension has been so commonly experienced that it's earned a label: "already but not yet." The good things that God promised to us are already ours, but we have not yet received them in full. The salvation, change and transformation of our character we experience now is only in part. It foreshadows the full and final transformation that we will experience in the future. In short, we're still becoming.
Our community is caught in a similar tension. We are an already, but not yet sort of community. We are a community that reflect's God at work in the world, but we are still learning how to do this well. We are still in the process of fully becoming the faith community God created us to be. Over the next few weeks we will explore the particular aspects of our community that we want to become. They are:
April 4: Easter is the Beginning of Becoming
Apr 11: Grace
